During a recent multi day run through the hill country and Southwest Texas, I came across Floore's Country Store. Upon doing some research I saw that they offered the perfect trifecta: beer, live music, and fried pickles. Done and done!
I later returned that evening for what I was hoping would be just insane amounts of awesome. Upon walking in the door, I was immediately confronted with two lovely ladies asking if I wanted steak of chicken. I'm sure I stood there for a few seconds while this question sank in and then replied "Neither, I'm here for beer and fried pickles." And here is where the awesome dial got spun from 11 back to 6. On Wednesday nights they have "Steak Night" and, well that is all. No other food is prepared (outside the aforementioned chicken).
I tried with all my might and charm every time I ordered another beer. I even sunk to a new low and pointed out that they were frying up chicken nuggets for the kids, so to me it was only natural to toss some pickles in there. Alas, my best attempts were foiled.
The next afternoon I returned, hoping there would be different staff but sure enough, as soon as I walked in one of the girls from the night before yelled "Fried Pickles!" from across the bar.
Embarrassing.
After kicking the shame that was around me under a nearby table, I proceeded to place my order. A short time later I was sitting outside enjoying what was brought before me. The pickles were indeed worth the trip back, so at least I had that going in my favor. A nice meaty cut that was bursting with sour juices, all contained within a crispy, golden brown batter.
The only thing that was left to do was order a couple more beers, enjoy the reward of my persistence, and revel in the fact that I was experiencing what was sure to be the best pickles in the greater San Antonio area - except on Wednesday nights.
